BlackBerry Maps Gets a Visual Overhaul – Follow These Instructions!
RIM has announced that they have updated the BlackBerry Maps with a new optimized look. The announcement was made on their BlackBerry Developer’s Blog of all places and mentions a few of the other nice updates that RIM has provided in their mapping data. You can see a sample of what the old maps look like (left) and what the new maps look like (right).
Here is a nice summary of them:
34 new countries, including Australia, Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, New Zealand, The Philippines and Taiwan.
New optimized visual appearance of maps
Stronger rendering engine
New color scheme (My favorite feature update)
New POI databases for hospitals, universities/colleges, police stations, train/subway stations, shopping centers, parking, parks, and airports added wherever available
Still blocked by AT&T on their BlackBerrys… Shmuks!
To get the new features you need to open BlackBerry maps (at least that is all you should have to do) The catch is that you need to perform the following steps on your BlackBerry to get the extended coverage and visual optimization in BlackBerry Maps. Shadid over at the BlackBerry Developer Blog was kind enough to detail how to get the new features enabled on your BlackBerry. As you can see the only real stickler is BlackBerry OS 5.0 devices which need to have bundle 1057 or later for this to work. OS 4.7 and lower and OS 6.0 devices can just clear the cache. I am guessing that new or freshly formatted devices will hopefully pull these new features automatically and not have to clear the cache to work but only time will tell.
